Estimation :
H. : 38 cm; l. : env. 22 cm; Prof. : 17 cm.
Wooden Ugabenzaiten with traces of polychrome, sitting on a white lotus in front of a metal halo. The eight armed Benzaiten is an esoteric form of
Kannon carrying a sword and a pearl in her main pair of hands and other implements in her six other hands. Above her head is the head an old man called Ugajin. He was originally a Shinto snake god and bestower of riches who became merged with Benzaiten at Enrakuji-Temple at Mount Hieizan by the Tendai-School of esoteric Buddhism near the end of the middle-ages.
To compare please check the very large Ugabenzaiten of H?gonji in Nagahama Town (Shiga province) which was dedicated in 1565.
Momoyama – Early Edo period.
